Arturia MiniFreak V firmware update: wavetable and sample oscillators
I walked the Arturia MiniFreak V firmware update in the plugin. I do not own the hardware MiniFreak. I do have an AstroLab, which will play MiniFreak patches, but the editing depth lives in the software.
The headline is two new oscillator types plus import. Wavetable and sample sit next to the engines you already know. You can drag in your own samples and wavetables. The granular modes can use those files too, which is the bit that changes how useful the older grain engines feel.

What this firmware actually adds
Two oscillator types. A wavetable engine with width and filter controls, and enough range that stacking it into the secondary engines (phase filter, folder, phaser) gets you somewhere denser than basic morphing. A sample engine with bipolar length, reverse when length goes negative, and a loop that shortens in real time. Drag-and-drop for both samples and wavetables.
The granular engines from the previous update are not new, but they are more useful now. Cloud grains, hit grains, frozen, scan, particle. They will reformat an imported file for you. They will not pitch-detect it. You still do that by ear.
I knocked a couple of patches together before I hit record. One is a wavetable pad. The other is a more experimental sample patch with LFO on the loop point and pitch from oscillator 2. Neither is a factory demo. They are just what I had under my fingers.
Sample oscillator: length, reverse, loop
Length is bipolar. At the halfway mark you are at zero and the sample disappears. Below zero it plays backwards. If the start point is still at the front of the file, reverse has nowhere to go, so you hear nothing until you raise start and push length negative together.
Loop at zero is off. Turn it up and the engine starts looping on its own. Keep turning and the loop window gets shorter in real time. That is the control I kept coming back to. Put an LFO on the loop point in poly kb so each voice resets, then modulate oscillator 2 pitch in octaves or fifths and you are already past the stock sample start/end workflow.
I ran that into ping-pong delay, reverb, and comb fold. The secondary engines (modal for a bell layer, harmo) stack cleanly on top. You do not need a new patch architecture. You need the sample engine sitting where a digital osc used to sit.
Importing your own samples (and the rename tax)
Drag and drop works. The software will ask to overwrite when filenames collide, and sample libraries with long or duplicated names get truncated in a way that forces every import to fight the previous one. I had to rename files before bringing them in. That looks like a hardware naming limit leaking into the plugin. It would be nicer if the software renamed on import. It does not today.
Once a sample is in, cloud grains will take it. Density and chaos behave as before. Hit grains with the start point parked on the transient give you those short looping grain bursts I like for texture over an 808 or a cheesy one-shot. Frozen tracks pitch. Scan plays through at a rate you set. Particle works well on vocals.
There is still no gain control on the sample itself inside the synth. Prep level before you import.
Wavetable into random keyboard and the arp
Wavetables are a good match for MiniFreak's random keyboard source. Set the keyboard source to random, pick a wavetable with some motion in it, drop an octave, turn on the arpeggiator. Gate and Spice give you the usual Arturia gate variation.
On the advanced page, put wavetable position on the random source. Put wave on sample-and-hold or LFO 2. You can only have one of random or linear key tracking at a time on that path, so pick random if you want the position jumps. Delay and reverb on the end are enough to make it read as a patch rather than a test tone.
FAQ
Do I need the hardware MiniFreak for this firmware?
No. The software gets the same oscillators and import. Hardware owners get it on the panel too. I only ran the plugin.
Does AstroLab get the new engines?
AstroLab can run MiniFreak patches. It does not give you the full editor. For this walkthrough I stayed in MiniFreak V.
Can I use my own samples in the older granular modes now?
Yes. That is the practical upgrade to cloud and hit grains. Format conversion is automatic. Pitch detection is not.
Where are the presets from the video?
Not uploaded yet. When I put a pack up it will sit on the Patreon and the blog. The newsletter on the site still has wavetables and extras if you want something to start from.
Is the sample name overwrite a bug?
It behaves like a hardware filename limit. Rename before import until Arturia gives the plugin its own rename step.
The video is the faster way to hear the reverse/loop behaviour. If you only try one thing from this Arturia MiniFreak V firmware update, make it bipolar length into a live-shortening loop with an LFO on the loop point.
