SPL Machinehead

Machinehead is a drum processing plugin that combines several processing stages into a single signal chain designed for aggressive, modern drum sounds. It includes a transient shaper, a distortion section with multiple clipping modes, a gate, a compressor, and a filter section. The routing is fixed in signal-chain order, reflecting the hardware design philosophy SPL applies to its outboard gear.

The distortion modes range from soft-clip waveshaping to harder clipping options that produce significant harmonic content, covering everything from subtle grit to heavily distorted kick and snare sounds. The integrated gate is particularly useful after the distortion section, as it cleans up the sustain and noise floor that heavy clipping introduces. While optimised for drums, Machinehead works on bass, synths, and any source where controlled saturation and transient shaping are needed in one place.
