SPL PassEQ
PassEQ is a software model of SPL’s PassEQ hardware, a passive equalizer with 72 filter bands across three frequency sections. Unlike active EQs that apply gain directly, a passive design works by attenuating signal and then compensating with a gain stage, which produces a characteristic interaction between bands and a more gradual, musical slope on cuts and boosts. The plugin replicates this topology faithfully, including the way adjacent band selections interact with each other.
The plugin covers a low section with shelving and bell curves from 22 Hz to 1 kHz, a mid section from 220 Hz to 22 kHz, and a high section with shelving from 1.8 kHz to 24 kHz. Each band offers multiple fixed frequency choices rather than a continuous sweep, which mirrors the workflow of the hardware and encourages deliberate tonal decisions. It’s particularly well-suited to bus and mastering work where the gentle, asymmetrical response of passive circuitry is preferred over surgical precision.
