Serum 2

Serum 2 is the major update to Xfer Records’ wavetable synthesizer, released in March 2025 as a free upgrade for existing Serum owners. The original Serum built its reputation on clean, high-resolution wavetable playback and an unusually readable interface for sound design work. Version 2 keeps all of that and adds four additional oscillator types: Multisample, Sample, Granular, and Spectral. A single instance of Serum 2 can now run wavetable, sample-based, and granular sources simultaneously, with each oscillator type offering its own set of manipulation tools including warp modes, FM, ring modulation, sample slicing, grain density and size controls, and spectral resynthesis with transient detection.

The wavetable engine has been refined with smooth interpolation that removes the stepped quality between frames, and the dual-warp system now applies to all main oscillator types, not just wavetables. A third main oscillator slot has been added, and the factory library has expanded significantly with a multisampled instrument collection recorded specifically for the update. The modulation routing, effects chain, and overall workflow remain consistent with the original, so the learning curve is low for existing users. Serum 2 is available as VST3, AU, and AAX on macOS and Windows.
