SPL Iron
The SPL Iron is a plugin emulation of SPL’s hardware Vari-Mu tube compressor, developed by Brainworx using their Tolerance Modeling Technology (TMT). The hardware original was built around a parallel dual-tube circuit — a 12AX7 and a 12AU7 running in separate compression paths through a Mu-Metal iron transformer, then recombined — which is what gives it a different character from single-tube Vari-Mu designs. The plugin models that topology directly, and TMT introduces per-channel analog component variance, so left and right channels have slightly different behaviour that adds up to a more natural stereo image than a perfectly symmetrical digital model would produce.
Six rectifier modes — using Germanium, Silicon, LED, and mixed diode combinations — cover a meaningful tonal range from soft and vintage-leaning to tighter and more forward-sounding. Attack and Release each have six settings from Slow to Fast, and there’s a sidechain section with four EQ filter presets plus external sidechain support. The plugin adds M/S processing, mono-maker, stereo width control, and THD for adding additional harmonic saturation. It’s used primarily for mastering and bus compression.
Another master bus regular... love this compressor.
