UR28M

The Steinberg UR28M is a USB 2.0 audio interface running at up to 24-bit/96kHz, built around a 6-in/8-out analog I/O configuration with two Yamaha D-Pre Class A discrete mic preamps, two additional line inputs, six line outputs, S/PDIF I/O, and two independent headphone outputs. The monitoring section is its standout feature: a 3×3 monitor matrix that lets you configure three separate monitor mixes and route them to three different sets of speakers, switchable from the front panel. Dim (–20dB), Mono, and Mute buttons round out the monitor control set, and the interface runs in standalone mode so the monitor switching works without a computer present.

DSP processing runs on a custom Yamaha chip onboard, hosting a REV-X reverb and six Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip instances — all with near-zero latency regardless of buffer size, since they bypass the DAW entirely. dspMixFx software handles routing and mix control. For a studio with multiple pairs of monitors and a need for latency-free performer folds, the UR28M punches above its class. It has since been superseded in Steinberg’s lineup, but remains a capable interface for rooms that need flexible monitoring without a dedicated monitor controller.
